Description This document proposes the urgent establishment of an eprint website for the University of Tasmania, and suggests corresponding policies for discussion. A mandatory self-archiving policy for research output, and a mandatory policy for archiving theses are suggested for discussion and implementation over several years. A School of Computing prototype website temporarily codenamed UTasER can be viewed at http://eprints.comp.utas.edu.au/ and illustrates the type of information that an eprints website will hold. Present document contributions are mainly from the School of Computing, but trial documents have also been entered by the Library. An Eprints server will increase the research impact of UTas research output by 3-5%, and is considered an essential part of the research strategy being undertaken in the School of Computing. Description Modern government and business units routinely collect and store structured data of general interest to them. In the course of their operations, these organisations often need to take decisions that do not directly follow from the available data. Specialised managerial skills are needed to interpret the data and derive useful conclusions. Subjective assumptions and judgments are made by the mangers to interpret the data. Where the data volume is large, it may be difficult to sift the data, as the managerial skills may not be available for the repeated evaluation of every entity in the database. A decision support system is needed that can be easily reprogrammed to cater for the subjective judgments and biases of the decision-makers. In this paper, we develop a model for a decision support system to identify promising entities based on the subjective preferences. The model can easily be integrated with a relational database system/tool such as Microsoft Access to examine entities in the database and to highlight those that have superior potential based on the decision-makers subjective judgments. Description A type system for the higher order pi-calculus is presented, using boolean annotations to carry information about the integrity of data. This extends previous work by the authors for a first order calculus; we argue that in a higher order setting certain notions of trustedness depend on the potential for communication during execution. Description This thesis details the development of a computer system (labelled the SLARTI system) capable of recognising a subset of signs from Auslan (the sign language of the Australian Deaf community), based on the pattern classification paradigm of artificial neural networks. The research discussed in this work has two main streams. The first is the creation of a practical sign classification system, suitable for use within a sign language training system or other applications based on hand gestures. The second is an exploration of the suitability of neural networks for the creation of a real-time classification system with the ability to process temporal patterns. Sign languages such as Auslan are the primary form of communication between members of the Deaf community. However these languages are not widely known outside of these communities, and hence a communications barrier can exist between Deaf and hearing people. The techniques for recognising signs developed in this research allow the creation of systems which can help to eliminate this barrier, either by providing computer tools to assist in the learning of sign language, or potentially the creation of portable sign-language-to-speech translation systems. Artificial neural networks have proved to be an extremely useful approach to pattern classification tasks, but much of the research in this field has concentrated on relatively simple problems. Attempting to apply these networks to a complex real-world problem such as sign language recognition exposed a range of issues affecting this classification technique. The development of the SLARTI system inspired the creation of several new techniques related to neural networks, which have general applicability beyond this particular application. This thesis includes discussion of techniques related to issues such as input encoding, improving network generalisation, training recurrent networks and developing modular, extensible neural systems. Description Many organisations have a large number of computers with varying usage patterns. Some of these machines at different locations are often free from time to time leaving them to do very little useful computation or none at all. It is at these times that this dynamically changing environment of machines can be used for a more useful task. This project reports the development and feasibility testing of a dynamic distributed computing environment. This is achieved by making use of ubiquitous web browsers to harness these underutilised computers. Therefore taking the idea of distributed computing away from the traditional paradigm of fixed hosts to which it is often associated. Description We introduce a new system of trust analysis for concurrent and distributed systems using the pi-calculus as a modelling tool. A Type system using boolean annotations guarantees that no run-time errors due to untrusted data being used in a trusted context are possible. We improve on other similar systems by introducing a safe environment in which trust-coercion can be performed based on the results of run-time checks. An algorithm for deducing the most general types for the type system is presented. Description Previous work in recognition of hand gestures has concentrated on classification of hand shapes, with relatively little work done on hand motions. This paper describes a recurrent neural network which has been trained to classify sixteen different hand trajectories, including relatively complex paths such as circles and back-and-forth motions. The network's ability to anticipate the classification of an incomplete gesture is also examined, and its implications for segmentation of gestures is discussed. Description The devices used with virtual environments for data entry aim to provide the user with a means to interact with the virtual environment in a natural, multi-modal manner. One particular issue faced by these devices is allowing to user to navigate through the virtual space in a manner similar to their real-world experience. Within the last few years a number of attempts to meet the challenge of providing this functionality have been made. These attempts have used a variety of different approaches to the problem, with significant differences in terms of the size and price of the input device, safety issues and the sense of immersion experienced by the user. The extent to which spatial memory is produced in the user has been commonly studied in real world experiences, but has rarely been investigated using different input devices within virtual environments. In this pilot study a number of device types are investigated based on different approaches to capturing the user's intent; pointing, waist tether and foot tracking. Runtime data as well as user response to questions examining spatial memory are used to make a statement about the comparative suitability of the tested devices. These result are used to motivate a proposal for a future approach for full-body-motion-capture input devices. Description This thesis aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a formal language (Finite State Process) automated verification tool (Labelled Transition System Analyser) at finding and resolving errors in design models of software. FSP is used to model the Lift Problem from a specification refined by validation. The specification is mapped to a finite state domain and tested for errors - in the mapping, in the understanding of the initial requirements, in the accuracy of the initial requirements, and in the concurrency properties of the identified co-operating entities. Exposition of errors refines (validates) the initial description, and drives their resolution giving rise to an evolutionary corrected model; upon exit of iterative analysis this is mapped to UML behavioural diagrams forming Implementation Specifications.
