Description
Mesoionic pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidinium elates 9 undergo rearrangement to the lower-energy pyridopyrimidinones 7 in solution at ordinary temperatures (t(1/2) approximate to 51 min at 75 degreesC), formally via the higher-energy ketene valence isomers 11. These ketenes are not directly delectable, and DFT calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G* level indicate that the rearrangement may be concerted via the ketenoid transition state 11TS, although the ketene conformer 11M is locally stable. FVT of the pyridopyrimidinones 7 is a method of synthesis of (2-pyridyl)iminopropadienone 4, a reaction thought to proceed via ring opening to the same ketenes 11 followed by elimination of the 2-(methylamino)pyridine 8. Recombination of 8 and 4 leads to mesoions 9 together with minor amounts of the isomers 10.

Description
Photochromic spirooxazines functionalized with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) oligomers were monitored using NMR spectroscopy at temperatures between 193 and 233 K before and after in situ exposure to UV irradiation. NOESY and ROESY experiments reveal the TTC (trans−s-trans−cis) isomer to be the dominant merocyanine isomer formed on photolysis, with some CTC (cis−s-trans−cis) isomer also present. Significant ROE cross peaks were observed between the “bulk” of the oligomeric units and protons across the entire photochromic core of the molecule, the intensity of these cross peaks suggesting that the interaction of the oligomer side chain and core of the molecule is significantly enhanced by the permanent attachment, especially with the PDMS side chain. The 2D NMR spectra indicate that there is exchange between the TTC and CTC isomers even at 193 K. This isomerization of the parent spirooxazine compounds, lacking the oligomeric side chains, was found to be acid-catalyzed, and DFT calculations support the strong possibility that it is the protonated merocyanine form that undergoes the facile isomerization process. Interconversion of the different merocyanine isomers is suggested to be fast on the NMR time scale under many experimental conditions, precluding the observation of different isomers using NMR spectroscopy at room temperature.

This study was performed to better understand the chemical behaviour of P in a variety of alkaline soils from southern Australia. To do so, surface soil samples of 47 alkaline cropping soils from Upper Eyre Peninsula in South Australia and from western Victoria were collected. The 22 soils collected from Eyre Peninsula were Calcarosols, and those from western Victoria were Vertosols, Alkaline Duplex soils, Sodosols, and Red Brown Calcareous soils. Parameters included total and amorphous Al and Fe, organic C, organic P, CaC[O.sub.3] content, P sorption characteristics, phosphorus buffer capacity, calcium lactate (Ca-Lac) extractable P, bicarbonate-extractable (Colwell) P, water-extractable P, anion exchange membrane extractable P (AEM-P), and isotopically exchangeable P (labile P). Concentrations of micronutrients in the Calcarosols were relatively low, considered to be a function of low clay contents. Given very low background Cd concentrations in the soils, it was estimated from Cd measurements that the majority of total P in the soils was derived from previous fertiliser applications. Phosphorus buffer capacities (PBCs) were relatively high in the Calcarosols and moderately high in the other alkaline soils. P sorption behaviour in the Calcarosols was a direct function of CaC[O.sub.3] content, although in the other alkaline soils, amorphous Al and Fe oxides were the principal determinants of the P sorption behaviour. Both Colwell and Ca-Lac extractants dissolved non-labile P in the highly calcareous soils, whereas AEM appeared to only remove surface-adsorbed P. In addition, Colwell P values were positively related to PBC and to the slope term in the Freundlich model ([K.sub.f]) when [K.sub.f] > 10. It is suggested that AEM-P may be a better predictor of P availability in highly calcareous soils compared with the other extractants.
