This page describes other ways to search and access ARO data.
Australian Research Online is compliant with the OpenSearch search protocol. You can use an OpenSearch compliant client to search Australian Research Online or even build your own service that includes Australian Research Online as an OpenSearch target.
You can add Australian Research Online to the Search Engines list in Firefox 2 or Internet Explorer 7. When you connect to Australian Research Online from your browser, the service will be listed in the Search Engines list within the browser toolbar. You can select the service, type your query in the search box beside the Australian Research Online icon and then link straight through to your results.
You can add a search box to your Website that will enable you to add your search terms and be dropped into Australian Research Online to view the results. Placing the search box on your organisational or personal website will help your visitors find and get items from Australian research output.
To add the search box, just highlight the code in the box below, right-click to copy it, and then paste it into the HTML on your own site.
You can set up a connection file for searching Australian Research Online via your own z39.50 search protocol compliant client. The Australian Research Online z39.50 target supports access to all records harvested into the service from Australian research repositories.
The service conforms to z39.50-1995 (Version 3). A subset of attributes from the Bib-1 attribute set is supported, and codes from the Bib-1 diagnostic set are utilised.

All records in Australian Research Online are available for harvesting via the Open Archives Initiative – Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH).

SRU is a standard XML-focused search protocol for Internet search queries, utilizing CQL (Contextual Query Language), a standard syntax for representing queries. The Australian Research Online SRU target supports access to all the records harvested into the service from Australian research repositories.
The Australian Research Online SRU service conforms to SRU version 1.1 and CQL level 1. Information about the indexes of the ARO SRU Service is available through the “explain” response. All records will be returned in Dublin Core format.
